Description

Product Description

Arthur L. Guptill''s classic Rendering in Pen and Ink has long been regarded as the most comprehensive book ever published on the subject of ink drawing. This is a book designed to delight and instruct anyone who draws with pen and ink, from the professional artist to the amateur and hobbyist. It is of particular interest to architects, interior designers, landscape architects, industrial designers, illustrators, and renderers.

Contents include a review of materials and tools of rendering; handling the pen and building tones; value studies; kinds of outline and their uses; drawing objects in light and shade; handling groups of objects; basic principles of composition; using photographs, study of the work of well-known artists; on-the-spot sketching; representing trees and other landscape features; drawing architectural details; methods of architectural rendering; examination of outstanding examples of architectural rendering; solving perspective and other rendering problems; handling interiors and their accessories; and finally, special methods of working with pen including its use in combination with other media.

The book is profusely illustrated with over 300 drawings that include the work of famous illustrators and renderers of architectural subjects such as Rockwell Kent, Charles Dana Gibson, James Montgomery Flagg, Willy Pogany, Reginald Birch, Harry Clarke, Edward Penfield, Joseph Clement Coll, F.L. Griggs, Samuel V. Chamberlain, Louis C. Rosenberg, John Floyd Yewell, Chester B. Price, Robert Lockwood, Ernest C. Peixotto, Harry C. Wilkinson, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, and Birch Burdette Long. Best of all, Arthur Guptill enriches the text with drawings of his own.

When I started flipping through this book, I got butterflies of excitement in my stomach. The vast number of high-quality drawings included alone make it worth owning. (I saw another review complaining about the poor quality of the printing; maybe that person had a different edition, because the pictures in mine, the 60th anniversary edition, are clear and nuanced.)

The narration is slow and wordy, what you might expect from a book published in the ’30s, well before Twitter and blogging and the modern focus on brevity in writing. But for the most part, I don’t mind it. It is incredibly thorough and the pace forces me to slow down and think on the ideas presented. Every idea, theory, and technique is meticulously presented, with accompanying illustrations clearly labeled. Each theory is accompanied by suggestions of exercises for the reader to complete.

It is—slowly—demistifying the technical and observational skills I so admire in my favorite pen-and-ink artists.

What is there to say about this book really other than it’s a great addition to any artists collection. It’s definitly got good quality illustrations and plenty of them. But as far as “content” goes what there is of it is all scattershot thought the chapters, most often found nowhere near its corisponding diagram/artwork. This leaves one trying in vein to find their place along the way :p The “educational” aspects of the book are frankly pretty common sense stuff. As far as the “art styles” explained in the example works goes, they’re far from contemporary. Modern artists even those specifically looking for more in-depth examples of engraving/cross hatching style works is going to find what’s on offer here slightly dull and out of context for our times. All that said the sheer number of illustrations in the book make the book worth the price :) if it can be had as cheaply as possible, get it that way. Three star for its level of usefulness, fourth star just on the amount of good quality art on display. Simple examples of art yes, quality none the less.

This book was thicker than I imagined. It is chuck full of comparison methods on using simple details, to lighting via ink criss hatching on different parts of an object.

Great for intermediate, advanced as it complements those who have already practiced with ink but want to know more.

Its got

Focus study on pieces, pattern uses, differences, etc

Aside how picture or scene changes depending on what you focus the cross hatching onto.

Cross hatch sample squares and lots to read up on in handling flow, and how to avoid cluttering a picture incorrectly.

For those intermediate/Advanced inkers try Gary Simmons: The Technical Pen. Its short but sweet and cost is low. Shows methods, and comparisons of many different cross hatch technique to sketching with inks

Only con its not for beginners as its 50/50 on showing/text.

This is a great book. One reviewer said it was not a good how-to book, but I could not disagree more. If you read the text and study the multitude of drawings in the book, you cannot help but to get better at drawing in general and pen and ink rendering. I like the fact that the author tells you right up front that it is not innate talent, but hard work that will make one a good pen and ink artist. People who are good at it practice their pen strokes, observe objects and sketch them as much as they can and add to their store of knowledge and skill. I wish I had this book when I was younger and gave up drawing for years because I thought I just wasn''t talented enough - as if you had to be born with drawing skills. I have been doing the excercises, practicing sketching and the studying pen and ink drawings of illustrators and artists and have seen much improvement. I also don''t try to make every sketch a masterpiece, but have fun doing them, making mistakes and learning. There is a lot of good information and advice in this book and I am sure it will be a reference to me for the rest of my life and to pass on when I am gone.

Just looking at the chapter headings I kept thinking, "I need that" or "I should know more about that". The book also features techniques and equipment specific to architectural drawing. For those of us with dip pen in hand, this book is an absolute necessity. For those modern felt tip artists, this book is an invaluable reference for managing light and dark and employing classic pen and ink technique. This book is never out of reach from my drawing table.

Although the first chapter on materials is a bit lost on me, as I am restricted to just ballpoint, every other chapter is still applicable and inspirational. The illustrations are just divine!

Some reviewers have complained that this book is old-fashioned or out-of-date, but I didn''t find that a problem. It was first published in 1976 so you won''t see any references to more modern inventions like acrylic ink, brush pens or even fineliners, however the Materials section is only 6 pages long (including illustrations). By far the biggest section is Techniques - these will never be out of date, and the author goes into much more depth on technique than I''ve seen in many modern books on pen and ink. You could work through most of the exercises in this book using any type of modern pen such as a ballpoint, fineliner or gel pen, but it is also useful to have a pen with a flexible nib, such as a brush pen, so you can vary pressure on the nib. I''ve only given 4 stars because there are quite a few chapters on architecture, which I''m not particularly interested in. I would have preferred fewer chapters on that and maybe one on faces, animals or landscapes. Overall though, I am enjoying working through the techniques in this book and would recommend it.

I wanted this book in hardback from it''s original printing, but it''s no longer available. When I found this paperback I was very happy because many of the illustrations are bigger than the original! Bear in mind it was written quite a long while ago so the language is a little archaic, but it is full of brilliant drawings in many different styles.

This partial reprint of Guptill''s 1930 classic on pen and ink is fascinating. Unfortunately it was written to enable students who had already mastered drawing to tackle a new medium so is not beginner- friendly. Though exhaustive and comprehensive it is extremely heavy going as the prose is both didactic and stodgy and requires a lot of effort to wade through. This is worth doing as there is lot of useful information in this book but you really have to work hard to get it. ( I particularly enjoyed the advice to sit on a chair "that is not so comfortable to invite laziness". Presumably you not only have to work very hard but to sit up very straight as well.) This martinet knew his stuff though and the book eventually repaid the effort involved in struggling through it although I suspect he would have found me an unsatisfactory student. I personally believe Dover should reprint the original in full and rather than removing the more outdated bits should just add some historical context for the modern reader. (Art education where you first spent years carefully drawing from geometric solids and casts before you were allowed to progress to ink or paint is as remote as a Renaissance studio to most of us. ) This is a classic but is serious, complex, inflexible, highly analytical and hard to read. But it is an interesting extra book for the artist and student of golden age illustration. Once you dig into this many of the exercises Guptill describes are excellent and still used today but this book, is neither for the inexperienced nor the faint-hearted.

The authoritative work on rending in pen. It may be written generations ago but this is the book to read if you want the knowledge. Other books may be useful, but this leaves no stone unturned. It is comprehensive. Some of the tools discussed may no longer be current, yet from mentioning them it gives insight into why and how renderings are done the way they are. Even for the discussions on light and shade alone make this book worth it -as such an understanding transfers to other forms of media. This isn''t a casual read, but more of a study book. If you make the effort, you''ll be richly rewarded.

The book was not what I had expected and reads like a highly technical architectural text book. For the hobbyist sketcher I think it is heavy going and too complex following long winded explanations before reaching an instruction on method and technique. It does improve when it eventually gets to the instruction and demonstration exercise sections but by then I was weary of the text and lost patience with the experience. Disappointed with the purchase.
